Why was Ellis Island needed?
As an immigrant, I needed Ellis Island to be able to leave my country and go to America. I wanted to leave behind the discrimination in Greece and experience equality in the states. I wanted better job opportunities, also. Other immigrants left because of corrupt governments, money troubles, criminals, over population, and food shortages. They needed Ellis Island to have better opportunities, more land, religious freedom, equal rights, jobs, and their family.
Why was it a special place for me?
Ellis Island is and will always be a special place for me, because it is the place where I met my freedom. I also had good experiences there, I met good people and learned new things.
What was it like at Ellis Island?
It was a very long process at Ellis Island. There was hours and hours of waiting. It was a bit hard to communicate to officers and inspectors, though. At my medical exam, I was a bit scared. I was tired, had dark eye circles, and my hair was messy. I could've seemed like I was insane. They would've held me back or sent me back home if I was seen as insane. Thank goodness I got through. Anyways, Ellis Island was a tiring process. But, it was well worth it.
